Exodus 21:22-23:13
(1) Talk about protecting the unborn:
"22 "If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely [a] but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. 23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise."
(2)"9 In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, 'This is mine,' both parties are to bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges declare [e] guilty must pay back double to his neighbor."(22:9)
This must be why the two prostitutes brought their case to Solomon who was judge and king (1 Kings 3). His judgment instilled a fear of the king in the people: "for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to administer justice." (1 Kings 3:28).
(3) Justice, Mercy & Faithfulness. Exodus 22 & 23 is full of words such as justice, oppression, false charges, honesty, mistreat, seduces...the list goes on. In this week's memory verse (Mt 23:23) Jesus accused the Pharisees of focusing on petty technicalities while overlooking "justice, mercy & faithfulness" in the law. Perhaps this section describes some of those themes to which he was referring?
