Jeremiah 8:8-9:26
1.(2014) Coincident with Psalm 78 (see below)is God's frustration with lying and deception (see also vss 3-4); and how God refines & tests through hardship(s):
See, I will refine and test them,
for what else can I do
because of the sin of my people?
8 Their tongue is a deadly arrow;
it speaks deceitfully.
With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbors,
but in their hearts they set traps for them.
9 Should I not punish them for this?”
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge myself
on such a nation as this?”

Psalm 78:32-55
1.(2014) Several thoughts - (1) In His mercy, God would subject His people to hardship(s) in order that they would "turn to him again"; (2) Turning included "remembering"; (3) Lying tongues that "flatter"; (4) Hearts must be "faithful to his covenant"; (5) God's mercy shown through "remembering that they were but flesh...":
In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;
in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.
33 So he ended their days in futility
and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek him;
they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,
that God Most High was their Redeemer.
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,
lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal to him,
they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;
he forgave their iniquities
and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger
and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,
a passing breeze that does not return.
