Exodus 2:11-3:22
(1) "God heard (the Israelites') groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob." (Ex 2:24)
See Genesis 46:4, 48:21. It amazes me to see how long God took to remember his covenant, to "look" on & be "concerned" with the Israelites; during "forced labor" (1:11) under the Egyptians who "worked them ruthlessly" (13) & "made their lives bitter with hard labor".
There is a quote in the July 2007 Tabletalk (p 27 July 9th devotional) from Calvin:
regarding Genesis 37:6..."the Lord performs his work by wonderful & unusual modes; and...brings forth the salvation of his Church: not from magnificent splendor, but from death and the grave."
Matthew 17:10-27
(1) "But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and for yours" (17:27)
I wonder if this is almost a display of God's humor? Can there be something appropriate about a weird miracle to respond to the irony of this tax; this demand? Matthew Henry reads:
Jesus inquired of him , before he could mention the subject, whether kings levied taxes from their own families or their subjects (e.g. strangers). By this Christ intimated, that, as the Son of God, he was Lord of the temple, of whom all its services were typical, so that he could not rightly be called upon for expenses which benefited those who were strangers. Thus Christ asserts his right, lest his paying this tribute should be misimproved to the weakening of his title as the Son of God, and the King of Israel and should have looked like disowning it himself.
